About
Michael Franti is a musician, entrepreneur, and humanitarian whose life’s work blends art, wellness, and service. Born in Oakland, California, to a father of African American and Nottoway Indian descent and a mother of Irish, Belgian, and German ancestry, he was adopted by the Franti family at seven months old and raised in a home where music, sports, and faith were central. After graduating from Davis Senior High School, Franti attended the University of San Francisco, playing basketball before leaving college to pursue music full-time. Over the past four decades, he has toured globally, performing songs that emphasize unity, optimism, and social awareness. Beyond the stage, he founded Soulshine Bali, a boutique resort and retreat center in Indonesia that combines hospitality, wellness, and creativity. His career reflects a lifelong mission to uplift others through music, mindfulness, and connection.
